LittleBigPlanet 2, is the second game of LittleBigPlanet and the third game in the series following a PSP version released in 2009. It is being developed for the PlayStation 3 by Media Molecule and released in January 2011. It boasts many technical improvements and new features while retaining compatibility with levels, costumes, and other content created for its predecessor.

In contrast to the first LittleBigPlanet, which was primarily a platform game, LittleBigPlanet 2's toolset facilitates the creation of many different play styles including shoot 'em ups, fighters, and role-playing games.



Rumours of LittleBigPlanet 2 started in March 2010 when a Sony representative stated that Media molecule were working on a new game. Later in April, musician Ochre made a revealing tweet which said that his song, Infotain Me, had been licensed for use in the game. With the cat out of the bag, Media Molecule officially confirmed the game's development in May 2010. LittleBigPlanet 2 was originally slated for release in Winter 2010. [1]

Backwards compatibility with the original LittleBigPlanet was always at the core of development, according to Alex Evans [2]. It would have been silly to let 3 million LittleBigPlanet levels go to waste, after all! However support for other features, such as Move Controllers and keyboard and mouse support, were hot topics for speculation. IGN reported in March 2010 that Move support had been confirmed, until Sony denied the rumours, only to further confuse matters later on!



LittleBigPlanet 2 was initially scheduled for release on 16 November 2010, which was revealed at the 2010 Template:Wp and would have resulted in its arrival shortly after the original game's second anniversary. A delay was announced on 23 September 2010 and the title ultimately launched worldwide over four days beginning on 18 January 2011.

The weeks preceding its arrival were occupied by the introductions of Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves,, and a downloadable demo. The flurry of activity during this period also resulted in the absence of the expected 2010 edition of The Sackies, which enjoyed a hiatus until December 2011.

Pre-Order IncentivesEdit

Nine costumes were employed as incentives for players to Template:Wp LittleBigPlanet 2. The contents of the Even More Animals Costume Pack were offered alongside the Ratchet & Clank pack, Toy Story's Alien, Tron's Clu, or The Muppets' Gonzo. The exact outfits available varied from one retailer to another.

Story Mode DemoEdit

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Story Mode Demo is a free sample of LittleBigPlanet 2 that was made available by the 22 December 2010 update of the Template:Wp. It includes three of the full game's story levels: Tower of Whoop, Avalon's Advanced Armaments Academy, and Rocket Funland. These were advertised as exhibitions of the Grappling Hook, Controlinator, Creatinator, and Sackbots.

Collector's EditionEdit

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Collector's Edition launched beside the standard version of the game in January 2011. It was produced in limited quantities and included a selection of downloadable content as well as a variety of physical items which varied by region. Its eleven costumes combined the nine used for pre-orders with the contents of the Jak & Daxter pack. It also granted purchasers five exclusive PlayStation Network avatars.

The North American version of this set was revealed with the game's original release date at Comic-Con. In addition to the game, costumes, and avatars, it contained a plush Sackboy and a pair of themed Template:Wp. Its European counterpart was later shown with the core costume and avatar bonuses along with a special case. The Australian edition was similar to Europe's but also offered a Sackboy doll for pre-orders.

Special EditionEdit

LittleBigPlanet 2: Special Edition is a version of the standard game bundled with a considerable amount of downloadable content: the Move Pack, Toy Story Level Kit, Toy Story Costume Pack, Even More Animals Costume Pack, Dogs Costume Pack, and Cats Costume Pack. It was released in North America on 15 November 2011. Due to the emphasis on Template:Wp content, it was also offered as part of a bundle with Move hardware and even with holiday bundles of the Template:Wp itself.

Extras EditionEdit

LittleBigPlanet 2: Extras Edition is an even juicier re-release which includes a wider array of downloadable content. Three level packs are part of the bundle: the Cross-Controller Pack, Move Pack, and The Muppets Premium Level Kit. It also contains The Muppets Costume Pack 1, Weekend Pursuits Costume Pack, Deep Sea Adventures Costume Pack, Sports Costume Pack, Dogs Costume Pack, and Cats Costume Pack. Altogether, these bonuses grant this version a grand total of 41 outfits, 34 levels, and 434 stickers in addition to all the goodies in LittleBigPlanet 2 itself!

The Extras Edition is scheduled to arrive across Europe on 27 February 2013 and in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2013.


LittleBigPlanet 2's story mode is in no way influenced by it's predecessor, with completely new and different characters, enemies and a brand new story. The story mode consits of 50 levels (30 levels and 20 mini levels) throughout 7 different environments (Da Vinci's Hideout, Victoria's Laboratory, The Factory of a Better Tomorrow, Avalonia, Eve's Asylum for the Mentally Alternative and The Cosmos). The story mode is partially continued in the Move Pack, where one of Victoria Von Bathysphere's many experiments goes awfully wrong, creating an evil enemy known as the cakeling.
